Spontaneous process refers to the natural process that does not need any external energy to occur. Non-spontaneous process, on the other hand, refers to occurrences that requires energy to happen.
Drying of leaves, spoilage of food and water falling from waterfalls are all natural occurences, therefore, considered as spontaneous processes.
However, breakage of egg, cooling of water, and cooking rice are all non-spontaneous processes that need external energy to happen.
Spontaneous and non-spontaneous processes are connected to the study of the second law of thermodynamics. When heat flows from higher temperature to a lower temperature, it is natural, therefore, spontaneous.
On the other hand, the reverse of heat transfer (from lower temperature to higher temperature), is impossible to occur naturally. It will need an external energy in the form of mechanical, electrical or work, for it to happen. Thus, motors and heat pumps (e.g. refrigerator, air conditioner) are used.
